Otaku Links: Let’s review

  • Since there have been so many new readers lately, I wanted to plug Musehack again. Musehack is a career site for geeks that doesn’t just focus on writing like I do. If you’re interested in a geeky career field, check it out.
  • This #gamergate stuff still isn’t over and I’m wondering how long I should keep not mentioning it. It’s becoming the elephant in the room. One thing I’ve been referencing often is Leigh Alexander’s guide to actually doing something to help people who have been victims of online harassment.
  • I love sharing readers’ blogs, so here’s another: The Thin Black Line. Like me, Matthew reviews anime and the difference in our reviews shows how subjective anime watching is, and the review that should matter most to you is your own.

  • Thanks for resharing the “Watamote” review! That was a tough one to write, but rewarding — doubly so given the stimulating discussion in the comments.

    • @GenjiPress:disqus no problem! I thought it was very well done. I remember reading the Kotaku article and thinking, “No, that’s not quite right.” You dug a little deeper.

  • About what’s happening in games…http://venturebeat.com/2014/09/05/the-deanbeat-a-microcosm-of-mobile-games-reveals-the-coming-death-of-the-consoles/

I think there’s a lot of change going on & no one knows what to make of it. Not just journalism, but so many outside factors that most people don’t think about. While both sides have made solid points (I wish people looked at both sides objectively instead of just the one being targeted), the fact that this discussion is taking place in the internet ruins any hope of an honest debate and progress. It’s like trying to calmly drive on a lane where every car crashes every 2 seconds.

It’s situations that make me see that the internet is a huge generator of BS that’s easy to manipulate.

I think for once, I’m glad to say that anime/manga fandom isn’t popular like video games. There was a tweet that said that at least anime/manga have made their way as college study material, unlike video games.

It’s hard for me to play video games right now honestly because of all this bickering. I’m going to quote Roy Mustang from FMA Brotherhood, “Everyone is guilty.”

    • @MangaTherapy:disqus thanks for sharing your take. I’m still playing video games, but just trying not to engage in the culture any more than I have to. People keep asking me if I want to have a debate about the journalism ethics that are at stake in gaming here, but I think it’s crazy to have that debate in this environment with no real facts and tons of harassment for anyone who disagrees. This isn’t ABOUT debate, it’s about getting people to shut up.

      • Just don’t at this point. No more cans of worms should be open. I wish people would leave you alone right now because of the complexity of the situation.

  • I think if there were to be a discussion on here about #gamergate there should a defined set of rules for said discussion. In the past few weeks there has been extremes on both ends of this that have toxicified several sites that I used to vist but now stopped and I dont want that toxicity to spread here. Like have a separate thread/chat room away from here that isn’t affiliated with the site or something of the sort.
