- Remove a letter from the title of an anime. What is the show about now? R/anime plays this game to great effect. Some of my favorites:
- K-O!: High school girls form a fight club.
- Sailor Moo: A cow becomes a magical girl.
- Blech: The same show.
- If you’re like me and you’ve read a lot about Japanese women’s unique struggles in the workforce, you might be surprised to find out some of your favorite animes were directed by women. I’m so glad to discover that a woman directed Free!
- Want to read part of my book for free? Lisa posted an excerpt from Chapter 3 of Otaku Journalism on her blog last week.
- While I was musing about anime piracy from a fan’s point of view this week, Ben Applegate of Kodansha Comics was sharing how piracy affects him as a manga editor.
- Tony also wrote about manga and scanlations for Project Otaku. Is it me or do I reblog Tony a lot? See, this is what happens when you email me your awesome posts.
- An oldie but goodie from Study of Anime: How Gundam Wing’s Duo Maxwell emulates a mythological shinigami.

“Gargantia on the Verduous Plane”
@Serdar, I’m guessing this would be about an explorer who lands on a foreign airplane? Here’s one my friend Grant came up with that I liked: “Ouran High School Host Cub” – A trained bear entertains guests.
Spic and Wol–*gets shot*
Evolutionary Girl Utena – It’s a Pokemon-magical girl match up about using evolving monsters to take over the world.
Piracy sucks and it affects fandom. We had the chance to take over a certain ero manga publisher’s business but declined. There’s no point in entering a market that has piracy on that level. In the end there will be nothing but scanlations.
@Peter, thanks for weighing in! It is a really, really sad situation. I wonder if education – showing fans how this hurts the industry – would help. Discussion after my last post taught me that some fans certainly don’t realize they’re breaking the law when they read scanlations. It seems like ero manga would be a top seller, too.
I can’t do scanlations, it just always felt wrong to me. Not just the piracy issue, but the entire act of reading a print medium online. I need the physical book when it comes to manga.
