Otaku Journalist Vlog #2: Spring anime sampler

I think I’m beginning to get the hang of this vlogging thing!

This time I’m sharing my thoughts on the opening episodes of Red Data Girl, Karneval, Aku no Hana, Muromi-San, Yuyushiki, and Oreimo 2.

Are you watching any of these series? I’d love to discuss them further. Leave a comment if you want to, too!

  • I think you come across as much more relaxed in your second video.

I’ve not seen any of the anime you reviewed but I’ll have to check a couple of them out I think.

Good job on this (and I hate springtime allergies too!) :)

    • @Zoe, thanks! Let me know if you check any of these anime out.

      • I’ve watched the first two episodes of Oreimo season 1 on Crunchyroll and like it so far. Will probably watch another two tonight.

  • Lauren, you’re doing an awesome job developing your vlog! The video was engaging and LOOKED great. Awesome job!

I really enjoy seeing you talk about Oreimo – you can definitely tell when you’re talking about a series you have a connection with! I’m watching this season as well (as you know) and…yeah…we’ll see where it goes. I just can’t quit these characters, even if I have a lot of issues with the show. :P

    • @Charles, thanks so much! I spent about three hours editing all those jumps (the original clip is just 20 minutes of me saying whatever) so it’s nice to hear somebody appreciated it.

Oreimo sure is SOMETHING… just what something remains to be seen.

  • Of those I’m watching RDG, Oreimo 2, and Aku no Hana as well as Suisei no Gargantia. RDG is turning out to not be my thing, but I think I’m going to check out Yuyushiki after this.

Your videos look really good but I’d like to make a recommendation in regard to the editing. I think you should experiment with even tighter timing on the jump cuts. Vlogging is medium that most people have a short attention span for and for better or worse it forces the vlogger to be more concise.

For instants when you cut to the clip of blowing your nose you could start playing the audio of your next sentence before the nose clip is done playing.

Also if you were going for something that is strictly a vlog I don’t think title cards work well with the pacing but if you were, appropriately enough, going for something slower and more review-y it works.

Sorry if all that was unwarranted, you did say something about editing in the first vlog.

    • @kegeen, no worries, this is totally welcome criticism. I’m an amateur at editing and I really want to get better. Can you recommend any videos or tutorials about showing even faster jump cuts? Also, uhm, what’s a title card? The “Otaku Journalist” intro thingy?

Let me know what you think of Yuyushiki!

These two video deal with vlogging and editing vlogs respectively, both done by Hank Green. The second one is a hour long capture of him editing the first video. He has a very rapid fire editing style which might not fit what you want to do, but I thing it is at least worth a partial watch.

The intro is what I meant by title card. I take back what I said about it. I depends on what what kind of feeling you are going for (i.e. professional vs casual)

I watched Yuyushiki, I like dynamic of the straight man and the two goofs, also the yuri undertones warm my heart.

Thanks for featuring Aku no Hana. My sensei’s niece visited VA and wanted to know about the series, but I found no info–until now! :)
