There’s only so much you can convey with the written word. That’s why when I was in journalism school, we had assignments to tell stories not just through articles, but through information graphics, podcasts, interactive websites, and film.
Writing is my favorite medium. But to keep some of those other skills from entirely atrophying, I’m presenting my blog post today in video format instead.
In this vlog, I kept it light and talked about five awesome things on my mind right now. To be more specific:
- An anime, Natsume’s Book of Friends. Yes, I have more to say on that!
- A manga, Genshiken: Second Season.
- A video game, Long Live The Queen.
- A book, The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne.
- And a website: tomatoi.st which I JUST NOW REALIZE I typo’d. Oops!
One last thing: At the beginning I call this my second vlog. It’s true, but you really don’t want to see the first attempt. I was kind of nervous, and I look like I’m being threatened with torture off camera!
Let me know what you think, but please be gentle. I’m going to have to build up my confidence if I ever want to record another one! Video pros, what do I do to master this trendy jump-cut editing style?

Very nice – I really enjoyed the video! I love that you’re moving this direction. You seem to be as apt to video as writing, and you definitely seemed to become more comfortable as the video continued.
I’m also really into the second season of Genshiken, thought it took me a long while to get used to!
Thanks Charles! Maybe next time I’ll just talk for the first five minutes and then toss it to loosen up.
Genshiken: Second Season should really be retitled “Everyone Loves Madarame.”
Well done! Many times when I see vlogs from some great writers, it just doesn’t work, but you handled it very well.
1/ Your recent post and now this vlog have made me want to watch Natsume Yuujinchou. On the other hand its has four seasons already…
2/ Genshiken is my all-time favorite. Are you looking forward to the Genshiken Niidaime anime too?
Your Japanese pronunciation is very cute ^^
@Dorry, thanks! And yes, I’ll definitely be watching the accompanying anime!
I’ve thought about doing a video blog, but I wonder how effective I would be at it. I’ve done video interviews and that’s about it.
Though it can be hard for me to gather my thoughts and talk about my favorite things since I can be a bit all over the place.
@Tony, it definitely takes a different mindset than writing does. The way I did this one was I just talked about a lot of different things and then edited the video very tightly with just a few key thoughts about each topic.
Do you have to read the firs season of Genshiken to understand the Second Season, or is it just a nice thing to have when going into it?
@Mav, I think there’s a ton of inside jokes you won’t get if you haven’t read the original Genshiken. It’s awesome, so start with that!
